A place for Remembrance

The 11th of November 2018 marks one hundred years since the guns fell silent on the Western Front to signal the end of the Great War.

And while attention naturally focuses on Cenotaphs and battlefields at this time of Remembrance, there’s a secluded corner of Southampton which played a vital role during that conflict and definitely deserves your attention now.

Royal Victoria Military Hospital

The military hospital which stood in the grounds of Southampton’s Royal Victoria Country Park was commissioned by Queen Victoria, and became a place she’d visit many times during her lifetime, often sailing up Southampton Water from Osborne, her Isle of Wight residence.

History permeates every corner of the park, and the newly installed displays bring the site back to life and help you visualise the extent of the hospital during World War 1 when an estimated 50,000 patients were treated for their wounds.
